Lesson 10: Soft and Short Field T.O.’s + Landings

Making them short and soft:

As you advance in your flying career, you will eventually want to visit some airports with shorter runways or soft runways (grass), or both.

There is a special way to takeoff and land on those two types of runways compared to using a nice long paved runway you’ve probably become accustomed to training on.

In this LESSON, we’ll cover:

  • Short Field Takeoffs
  • Short Field Landings
  • Soft Field Takeoffs
  • Soft Field Landings

Now the inevitable question is: what happens when you have a short and soft runway since there are very different procedures for each type.  This question is something we will go in-depth into in one of our news articles on the site.  You should also go over this with your CFI to get their opinion and clarification on it.

Sorry folks for the hard landing. It wasn’t the pilot’s fault, and it wasn’t the plane’s fault. It was the asphalt.
